Bassett’s Lifetime Original Movie, Betty & Coretta, has been completed just in time for black history month. The film co-stars Mary J. Blige who plays Dr. Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X. Bassett will play Coretta Scott King, the wife of Martin Luther King Jr.
“We’ve seen, a number of times, the story of their husbands — and rightly so,” Bassett said in a recent interview. “They were tremendous influences on our culture and our times and moving America forward. But the women — and people usually say ‘behind these men,’ but I say ‘married to these men,’ because I think they were equally as significant in their own right — very strong. Very forceful. They had their own opinions. It was a different time when they were married, in terms of a woman’s perceived place, but they were towers of thought and activism — and we get to see that.”

Starring in a McDonald’s or Burger King commercial was a childhood dream of Mary J.Blige but Blige’s dream turned into a quick nightmare when she saw the final edit of her Burger King commercial that dropped a few months back.
Blige says she “wanted to crawl under the bed,” when she saw the final edit, saying: “It was a mistake but I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn’t come out like that. It was sold to us that I would be shot in an iconic way. I was looking for someone to have mercy, but no one had mercy. It was a learning experience. It hurt my feelings. It crushed me for like two days.”
“I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that purposely. I thought I was doing something right, so forgive me.”
Somebody should have told Mary that NO GOOD comes out of Black folks singing and dancing about fried chicken. Has she any confident Blacks on her payroll to advise her properly?

In an interview with WENN in Birmingham, Blige confirmed last week that she will be playing Dr. Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X’s wife, in the TV movie ‘Parallel Lives’ set to begin filming soon.
