Casting of Thandie Newton in ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ Sparks Petition

Fans of the novel Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie are angry that Thandie Newton has been cast in the lead role.

The novel chronicles the lives of several characters during the course of the Biafran War that took place in Nigeria from 1967 to 1970. Tribal conflicts between the Hausa and the Igbo initiated this Nigerian Civil War, which led to the genocide and starvation of over 3 million people. The main characters in this book are Igbo. Igbo people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, and they were also the main victims of this horrifying war.

Igbo people, like any other people range in physical characteristics as well as complexion. However, the majority of Igbos are dark brown in complexion. Igbo people do not look like the bi-racial Thandie Newton. She is not Nigerian, and she does not physically resemble Igbo women in the slightest.

As a result, a petition has been started asking the filmmakers to reconsider casting this role.

NEW MOVIE TRAILER: Tyler Perry’s ‘Good Deeds’

How is it possible that Tyler Perry is starring in a movie that actually looks worthy? I’m certain I’ll watch this when it airs on TVone.

Hard to believe Hollywood greenlit this. For a second there this film may cause you to believe that quality Black Cinema is on a rise. There seems to be no mammy caricature, no loud Black women obsessed with Jesus and fried chicken, no weak Black men with criminal records……huh?

But don’t be fooled by ‘Good Deeds.’ This is not indicative of the future of Black cinema. After all, Tis The Season for Hollywood Trickery.

Speaking of Trickery, Word on the Skeet is that Tyler is engaged. To a woman. Who is Black……SAY WHAT!!!

Guurrlll….

New Movie Trailer: Retreat

Here’s the trailer for the UK-produced thriller Retreat, starring Thandie Newton, Super Delicious Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell.

Via Indie Wire:

In the film, Murphy and Newton play a couple who travel to a remote island cottage in an effort to focus on putting back the pieces of their broken marriage. Their plans are altered by a wounded and armed stranger who warns about a deadly airborne virus. In the interest of survival, the trio seal themselves inside the cottage, and tensions soon rise.

Retreat opens in the USA on October 21st, and in the UK on October 14th.

I love Cillian but why is he attracted to pandemic movies?
